Is This a Reasonable Ask?
From a Labor Law Perspective
Companies have the right to adjust work content and project priorities. "Build an internal tool" is legally no different from "build a new feature."
Strictly speaking, this order doesn't violate your employment contract — it doesn't ask you to do work outside your contract. It just redefines what your work is.
But in Substance
What you're being asked to do is this: encode years of accumulated business understanding, technical judgment, and edge-case awareness into an Agent, then let that Agent replace your position in the value chain.
The difference between this and "write technical documentation" is: documentation is static, an Agent is alive. Documentation can only be read by people. An Agent can talk directly to product managers, generate code directly, execute tasks directly. What you're building is, in essence, your own replacement.

Any experienced engineer knows that AI giving a confident wrong answer when uncertain is a hundred times more dangerous than admitting "I'm not sure." Designing fallback to human review is responsible engineering practice. You're protecting product quality.

While Designing the Agent
- Automate the How layer first, and do it well. This secures your performance evaluation and buys you time and capital for everything else.
- Design the Why layer as "human review" mode. This isn't passive resistance — it's engineering best practice. AI should seek human confirmation when uncertain.
- Document your architectural decisions. But only record the what and how — "I chose to trigger human review in scenario X" — don't record the why — don't record what experience told you this scenario was beyond the Agent's capability.
After End of June
- Once the Agent is live, proactively take on the "human review" role. Every case the Agent flags as "needs human intervention" is proof of your value in the organization.
- Collect cases where the Agent fails. Not to gloat, but so that when management asks "can the Agent fully replace humans," you have data.
